Economic narratives are for the scientific garbage dump

Comment on Maria Popova on ‘How Kepler Invented Science Fiction and Defended His Mother in a Witchcraft Trial While Revolutionizing Our Understanding of the Universe’*

Own post, Twitter-Reference

To recall, science is about true/false and nothing else. Strictly speaking, it is NOT the task of science to convince the “scientifically illiterate public.” The acceptance of a theory depends alone on the proof of material/formal consistency and NOT on the approval of the general public or the number of followers on Twitter. Storytelling, on the other hand, has been the tool of religious/political fraudsters since they put down their fake accounts of creation and evolution/history in their so-called holy books. To put the scientist Kepler at one level with religious/political impostors is an absolute disgrace.

“In 1609, Johannes Kepler finished the first work of genuine science fiction — that is, imaginative storytelling in which sensical science is a major plot device. Somnium, or The Dream, is the fictional account of a young astronomer who voyages to the Moon. Rich in both scientific ingenuity and symbolic play, it is at once a masterwork of the literary imagination and an invaluable scientific document, all the more impressive for the fact that it was written before Galileo pointed the first spyglass at the sky and before Kepler himself had ever looked through a telescope. Kepler knew what we habitually forget — that the locus of possibility expands when the unimaginable is imagined and then made real through systematic effort.”

To call Somnium a piece of “imaginative storytelling” is tempting but utterly misleading. Somnium is an example of a thought experiment. And Kepler drives home the crucial point of the exercise: “Everyone says it is plain that the stars go around the earth while the Earth remains still. I say that it is plain to the eyes of the lunar people that our Earth, which is their Volva, goes around while their moon is still. If it be said that the lunatic perceptions of my moon-dwellers are deceived, I retort with equal justice that the terrestrial senses of the Earth-dwellers are devoid of reason.”

So, the use of the thought experiment is to clarify a feature of the real world. It is a consistent abstraction that gets closer to reality. A narrative, on the other hand, is an inconsistent fantasy that leads away from reality. This is what science fiction does. It is therefore misleading to call Kepler an inventor of science fiction or a storyteller.

“Like any currency of value, the human imagination is a coin with two inseparable sides. It is our faculty of fancy that fills the disquieting gaps of the unknown with the tranquilizing certitudes of myth and superstition, that points to magic and witchcraft when common sense and reason fail to unveil causality. But that selfsame faculty is also what leads us to rise above accepted facts, above the limits of the possible established by custom and convention, and reach for new summits of previously unimagined truth. Which way the coin flips depends on the degree of courage, determined by some incalculable combination of nature, culture, and character.”

Right, there is progressive use of abstraction and regressive use. The latter is characteristic of economics. Economic storytelling is not applied to enlighten the general public but to deceive it. The deeper reason is that economics is not a science but for 200+ years now political agenda pushing in the mantle of science. Economics suffers since the founding fathers from the Fallacy of Insufficient Abstraction.

“By the time of Astronomia nova, Kepler had ample mathematical evidence affirming Copernicus’s theory. But he realized something crucial and abiding about human psychology: The scientific proof was too complex, too cumbersome, too abstract to persuade even his peers, much less the scientifically illiterate public; it wasn’t data that would dismantle their celestial parochialism, but storytelling.”

It is just the opposite in economics. There is much storytelling but neither mathematical nor empirical evidence for any of the major approaches, i.e. for Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, Austrianism, or MMT. Narrative economics is proto-scientific garbage.

New Economic Thinking ― the definitive results

Links on Lars Syll on ‘Rethinking economics in Copenhagen’

Blog-Reference

From the standpoint of science, economics is a heap of proto-scientific garbage. Both Orthodoxy and traditional Heterodoxy are outside of science, both are political agenda-pushing in the cloak of science. Because of this, economics needs a Paradigm Shift. This is long known: “There is another alternative: to formulate a completely new research program and conceptual approach. As we have seen, this is often spoken of, but there is still no indication of what it might mean.” (Ingrao et al. 1990)

Rethinking Economics or New Economic Thinking means performing what is called a Paradigm Shift in methodology. New Economic Thinking does NOT mean to push a new political agenda or to put lipstick on the dead pig. Economists have NO idea what a Paradigm Shift is all about.

Gosh! The One Percent have gotten $21 trillion richer: Links on Distribution

Comment on Eric Levitz on ‘The One Percent Have Gotten $21 Trillion Richer Since 1989. The Bottom 50% Have Gotten Poorer.’*  **

Blog-Reference and Blog-Reference on Nov 23

In order to tackle distribution, it is certainly a good thing to have a valid Profit Theory. Economists, though, have to this day NO idea what profit is. Their multiple common-sense notions of profit stem from microeconomic observations that are subject to the Fallacy of Composition and therefore do not translate into macroeconomic profit.

The axiomatically correct macroeconomic Profit Law reads Q≡Qm+Qn with Qm≡Yd+(I−Sm)+(G−T)+(X−M). This Law tells one, among many other things, that Public Deficit G−T>0 = Private Profit Qm, which means that the Oligarchy’s financial wealth and public debt grow in lockstep. This explains, as a first approximation, why the “One Percent have gotten $21 trillion richer”. As it happens, the public debt currently stands around $22 trillion. Needless to emphasize that this back-of-the-envelope comparison can and must be greatly refined, but it is good enough for now. The Profit Law explains the extremely skewed distribution of income and financial wealth. The primary distributional effect via profit is reinforced by the interest on public debt.

Public deficit-spending/money-creation is a free lunch program for the Oligarchy. The fact is that the so-called market economy has already been on the life support of the state for a long time. Profit is, in the main, produced by public deficits. The Oligarchy, in turn, uses the opulent free lunches to corrupt the state’s legislative, executive, and judiciary institutions in its favor. This constitutes a positive feedback loop, and this, in turn, explains the exponential deterioration of distribution.

MMTers claim that public deficits are a good thing because they increase “private” financial wealth. This is not quite correct because, on closer inspection, public deficits increase the financial wealth of the one-percenters and NOT of the ninety-nine-percenters. The weasel word “private” obscures this distributional fact. The MMT policy of permanent deficit-spending/money-creation amounts to a permanent self-alimentation of the Oligarchy to the detriment of the ninety-nine-percenters.

Of course, MMTers are Progressives and vehemently against the unequal distribution of income and wealth. They identify the Neoliberals as culprits and their greed-is-good philosophy, and their austerity policy. It is important to note that bad philosophy and bad behavior cannot explain the amount of overall monetary profit Qm, which is measurable with the precision of two decimal places and is determined by simple balance mechanics.

The economic fact of the matter is: so-called free-market economies like the USA have long been on full life-support of the state. The continuous creation of financial wealth has become the first and foremost economic task of the state. The Oligarchy is continuously fed by deficit-spending/money-creation. From the perspective of society, though, the Oligarchy’s financial wealth is roughly equal to public debt, which means that the net financial wealth of society as a whole is zero. People think that public debt is the business of the state and forget that the state is only an intermediary, which, in turn, means that economically, they own the debt. So, when a private household calculates its net financial wealth, it has to deduct its share of public debt. This is not done, of course, which means that private households are poorer than they think.

Economists in general and MMTers, in particular, deceive the general public about the distributional effects of deficit-spending/money-creation. This is their job as useful idiots of the Oligarchy.

You ask: “Do you support the welfare state?”

The realization or elimination of the welfare state in the United States is the business of the Legitimate Sovereign of the United States. Nobody has to interfere in the process. Least of all science.

To recall, the principle of the separation of science and politics also holds for economics. It is self-evident and borne out by history that science cannot improve politics, but politics always corrupts science.

The economist as scientist figures out how the economic system works. As a scientist, I neither support right, center, nor left politics but have proved with the help of elementary logic/mathematics that the major approaches ― Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, Austrianism, MMT ― are proto-scientific garbage and that, by implication, Walrasians, Keynesians, Marxians, Austrians, MMTers are either stupid or corrupt or both.

Note that the abuse of science for political purposes always comes in the cloak of the do-gooder, world-saver, philanthropist, welfare improver, and heroic fighter for WeThePeople. Real do-gooders do good and do not talk much about it, while false do-gooders do much troll-talk on social media but nothing else.

Blog-Reference and Blog-Reference on Nov 10

For the general public, the most important thing to know about economics is that there is NO economic science. Yes, there is a prize with the title: “Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel” but NOTHING REAL corresponds to the word Sciences.

For the general public, the crucial thing is to keep political and theoretical economics apart. The main differences are: (i) The goal of political economics is to successfully push an agenda, the goal of theoretical economics is to successfully explain how the actual economy works. (ii) In political economics anything goes; in theoretical economics, the scientific standards of material and formal consistency are observed.

For the general public, the most difficult thing is to realize that theoretical economics (= science) had been hijacked from the very beginning by political economists (= agenda pushers). Political economics has produced NOTHING of scientific value in the last 200+ years.

The major variants of political economics come under the heading of Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, Austrianism, and MMT. These approaches are mutually contradictory, axiomatically false, and materially/formally inconsistent. Economics is proto-scientific garbage since Adam Smith.

Economic policy guidance ― left/center/right does not matter ― has NO valid scientific foundations. The lack of scientific content, though, is not a problem because economics has no scientific function but a propaganda function, i.e. to push the current agenda of the Oligarchy.

At the moment, one can observe the switch from a direct pro-Oligarchy neoliberal propaganda to a more social/emphatic/inclusive/populist/WeThePeople/save-the-world propaganda. In real terms that does not matter much, it is just a change in the Oligarchy’s communication strategy.

Joseph Stiglitz is a co-winner of the 2001 EconNobel. The EconNobel has nothing to do with scientific achievements but is an Oligarchy-promoted reward for successful agenda-pushing. So, when Joseph Stiglitz declares the “End of Neoliberalism” this is a signal to the average academic economist that the Oligarchy has changed the communication strategy. Roughly speaking, buzzwords like market and efficiency and growth and competition vanish into the background and buzzwords like WeThePeople and social empathy and sustainability and cooperation are put in the foreground. MMT’s Stephanie Kelton is the personification of the socially attractive repackaging of Wall Street’s economic policy. Comment on Philip Mirowski on ‘Why Is There a Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics?’*

Own post, no external Blog-Reference and Blog-Link, and Blog-Reference

Economics claims to be science from Adam Smith/Karl Marx onward to the “Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel”. Yet, everyone who looks closely into the matter eventually arrives at the conclusion that economics is a failure/ fake/fraud or what Feynman called a cargo cult science: “They’re doing everything right. The form is perfect. ... But it doesn’t work. ... So I call these things cargo cult science because they follow all the apparent precepts and forms of scientific investigation, but they’re missing something essential.”

The major approaches ― Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, Austrianism, and their derivatives ― are mutually contradictory, axiomatically false, materially/formally inconsistent, and all got the foundational economic concept of profit wrong.

All appearances to the contrary, economics is NOT a science but political agenda-pushing. Since the founding fathers, economists have violated the principle of the separation of science and politics. Political economics has produced NOTHING of scientific value in the last 200+ years. As a result, neither right-wing nor left-wing economic policy guidance ever had sound scientific foundations. Economic controversies should not be seen as a struggle for scientific progress but as turf wars of the billionaires-sponsored academic mob.

Economics is failure/fake/fraud from the curriculum to the peer review of journals to the Nobel Prize, and orthodox/heterodox/pluralist economists are part of it, not to forget methodologists and the historians of economic thought. For details of the big picture, see

The EconNobel is NOT a recognition of genuine scientific merits ― there are none in economics ― but a reward for successful agenda-pushing handed out by the Bank of Sweden on behalf of the Oligarchy. The Bank of Sweden is in NO position to pass judgment in matters of science.

All appearances to the contrary, economics is NOT a science but political agenda pushing. The format of popular propaganda is, of course, NOT the abstract theory but a concrete narrative. Doing away with semantic smoke what remains is the plain fact that narrative is just another word for political fraud. MMT: The new Center of the Universe of political fraud

Comment on Warren Mosler on ‘Full Employment AND Price Stability’*

Own post, no external Blog-Reference

MMT claims that mainstream employment theory is false. So far, MMT is correct, mainstream economics is proto-scientific garbage since Adam Smith. But MMT claims also that MMT’s employment theory is superior. This claim is known to be false.#1, #2, #3

MMT is for the greater part storytelling and for the smaller part proper scientific analysis. The analysis is based on the MMT sectoral balances equation, i.e. (I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M)=0. This equation is provably false. The correct balances equation reads (I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M)−(Q−Yd)=0.#4 It boils down to Public Deficit (G−T) = Private Profit Q. Proper scientific analysis tells one that the MMT policy of deficit-spending/money-creation is a free-lunch program for the Oligarchy.#5

Needless to emphasize that such a program cannot be sold to WeThePeople. This is why MMT is repackaged as a social program. The argument of the MMT snake oil sellers is simply that MMT has the solution for all problems beginning with unemployment and ending with global warming.#6 This is just a political fraud.#7 Because MMT’s foundational equation is false the whole analytical superstructure is false. Because the theory is false, MMT’s economic policy advice has NO valid scientific foundations.

From this follows that both academic and non-academic MMTers are either stupid or corrupt or both. MMT is a plain political fraud and Warren Mosler is one of Wall Street’s loudest and busiest agents.#8-#14

Circus Maximus: Economics as entertainment, personality gossip, virtue signaling, and lifestyle promotion

Comment on Michael Roberts on ‘The world’s scariest economist?’*

Blog-Reference and Blog-Reference

A closer look at the history of economic thought reveals that there are TWO economixes: political economics and theoretical economics. The main differences are: (i) The goal of political economics is to successfully push an agenda; the goal of theoretical economics is to successfully explain how the actual economy works. (ii) In political economics, anything goes; in theoretical economics, the scientific standards of material and formal consistency are observed.

The historical fact is that theoretical economics (= science) had been hijacked from the very beginning by political economists (= agenda pushers). Political economics has produced NOTHING of scientific value in the last 200+ years: Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, Austrianism, MMT are mutually contradictory, axiomatically false, and materially/formally inconsistent. Political economists are NOT scientists but clowns/useful idiots in the political Circus Maximus.

Economics claims to be science and, consequently, the economist has to uphold scientific standards. Scientific standards have been well-defined since antiquity: “Research is, in fact, a continuous discussion of the consistency of theories: formal consistency insofar as the discussion relates to the logical cohesion of what is asserted in joint theories; material consistency insofar as the agreement of observations with theories is concerned.” (Klant)

However, since Adam Smith, the primary task of economists is to deliver some scientifically looking justification for already decided upon policies. Last time it was Friedrich Hayek who acted as a useful academic idiot for Prime Minister Thatcher/President Reagan and the advancement of neoliberalism. Lately, things have changed.

Rockefeller called the university the best investment he ever made. The habit of billionaires to prioritize economics among the sciences for sponsoring (remember that Marx was sponsored by Engels) continues to then. Well-known examples of founding/funding are institutions like the London School of Economics, the Cowles Commission, or the University of Chicago. This, though, is only the historical tip of the iceberg.

Economics is a failed science, but economists have done a good job as propagandists. #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 As Keynes quipped: “Practical men who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist.” Note well that it is a matter of utter indifference whether an economist identifies himself as left/center/right. These are only labels for addressing different target groups. #6

It seems that economists have been given a new communication strategy which roughly runs as follows: science ⇓ entertainment ⇑, theory ⇓ narrative/storytelling ⇑, solution-oriented debate ⇓ jolly game show ⇑, promotion of knowledge ⇓ agenda-pushing/ disinformation ⇑, objective authority ⇓ subjective empathy ⇑, clarity/precision/ consistency ⇓ swampiness/anything-goes ⇑, logical analysis ⇓ emotional moralizing ⇑, globalism ⇓ nationalism ⇑, towards the true theory ⇓ towards the pluralism of provably false theories ⇑.

Some pictorial examples (Source Twitter):

Note that the above-mentioned economists have NO idea about what profit ― the foundational concept of economics ― is and how the monetary economy works. They lack sound scientific foundations yet dole out economic policy advice.

Economists have always been a hazard to their fellow citizens.#7 For more about econogenics see AXECquery.
