Stephanie Kelton: “All deficits are good for someone” Yes, Someone=Oligarchy

Comment on Andrew Taylor on ‘“All deficits are good for someone”: Visiting economist shrugs off debt concerns’*

Blog-Reference

MMTers never let a crisis go to waste. For burning Australia, Stephanie Kelton has good news: “The good news appears to be that there is recognition that what matters is human outcomes and climate outcomes, not budgetary outcomes.” “She is in Australia for a series of events, including engagements with PricewaterhouseCooper in Sydney and Melbourne this week. Her book The Deficit Myth will be published this year.”

Clearly, Stephanie Kelton is on a promotion tour. What are her unique selling propositions?

• “ … budget deficits do not matter in a country with its own currency unless they cause inflation …”
• “It’s normal and customary for governments to run deficits,”
• “The deficit is nothing more than the government’s financial contribution to some other part of the economy.”
• “… a Democrat president, if elected, should not work to eliminate the budget deficit, which stands at US$1 trillion.”
• “Keep it. There’s no evidence that the deficit is too big,” … The trillion-dollar deficit is perfectly fine and we could probably go higher.”

Stephanie Kelton is the most prominent cheerleader for deficit-spending/money-creation. Deficit-spending/money-creation is advertised as the solution to almost all problems, from environmental catastrophes to the Green New Deal to unemployment to inequality to homelessness. #1

So, Stephanie Kelton is the good MMT angel who fights for WeThePeople, right? Wrong!

As a matter of principle, all the goals Stephanie Kelton mentions can be achieved with a balanced budget. However, budget-balancing is anathema to MMTers. #2 They are hell-bent on deficit-spending/money-creation. Why? Because the macroeconomic Profit Law #3 implies Public Deficit = Private Profit, and as a consequence, Financial Wealth of the Oligarchy = Public Debt of WeThePeople. Thus, MMT policy produces the extremely unequal distribution of income/wealth that eventually destroys both the economy and society. MMTers are NOT the benefactors of WeThePeople but the PR/Marketing/Sales-force of the Oligarchy.

Worse. MMTers corrupt science. MMTers are academics, and they camouflage their lethal mission with fake economics. At the core of their scientific fraud stands a misrepresentation of the foundational relationships of macroeconomics. From the MMT balances equation (I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M)=0, MMTers derive the slogan Government Deficit = Non-Government Surplus. #4, #5 The MMT equation is mathematically false, to begin with.

For the three sectors (business, household, government) of a closed economy the Profit Law boils down to Q=(G−T)−S and for two sectors (business, government) to Q=(G−T), that is, to Public Deficit (G−T) = Private Profit Q. And this tells everyone that MMT is a free-lunch program for the Oligarchy and that MMT is not only fake science but complicity in fraud of gigantic proportions. #6-#9

How MMT enlightens Washington

Comment on Zach Carter’s ‘Stephanie Kelton Has The Biggest Idea In Washington’

Blog-Reference

Anybody with an IQ around room temperature counts as a genius in Washington. Against this benchmark, Stephanie Kelton’s MMT policy proposals look like a rather big idea.

MMT promises to reconcile “the trifecta of growth, employment and price stability”. Note, first of all, that distribution is not mentioned. For good reasons. Distribution is the lethal flaw of MMT. #1

“Adoption of policy based on MMT analysis should keep the economy operating close to optimal output and employment … with the JG playing the dual role of providing a price anchor, on one hand, and on the other, mopping up residual unemployment after the application of functional finance to fiscal policy based on stock-flow consistent macro modeling.”

And here exactly lies the problem. MMT analysis and macro modeling are anything but consistent. Because of this, MMT policy guidance never had valid scientific foundations. MMT is soapbox economics. MMT’s foundational macroeconomic balances equation is provably false, and this settles the matter once and for all. #2

According to the axiomatically correct macroeconomic Profit Law, it always holds that Public Deficit = Private Profit. Therefore, MMT is a program for the one-percenters and has never been anything else.

The Job Guarantee is the banner that Stephanie Kelton and the rest of the MMT sales team enthusiastically wave in order to cover the one-percenter agenda. The Huffington Post’s attempt to sell Stephanie Kelton as the incarnation of the triumph of the working class/ninety-nine-percenters over Wall Street/one-percenters is a bad joke. #3

Sandwichman has compiled the key statements of Zach Carter’s portrait of Stephanie Kelton over there at EconoSpeak. Here is the copy/paste:

• “Everybody wants a piece of Kelton these days because a simple, radical idea she has been workshopping her entire career is the next big thing in Democratic Party politics. She calls it the job guarantee... “
• “Once an outsider, her radical economic thinking won over Wall Street. Now she’s changing the Democratic Party.”
• “A onetime college dropout at California State University in Sacramento, Kelton has managed to earn the esteem of both Sanders and an oddball clique of multimillionaire Wall Street traders.”
• “If you listen to Kelton long enough, you notice that she never refers to “bankers” or “Wall Street” with the derisive tone common among her political allies. She talks instead of “the financial community.””
• “After all, Wall Street took her under its wing before Democrats took her seriously.”
• “Her career had changed tracks. She wasn’t just a clever economist with some quirky ideas anymore. Her credibility with Wall Street began to register as academic clout.”
• “There are thousands of left-wing economists. But it’s hard for the economically inexpert to distinguish brilliant creativity from quackery. Kelton’s social credentials with Wall Street helped her stand out.”

In other words, MMT pushes the agenda of the one-percenters, and Stephanie Kelton is the ideal person for emotional social marketing and hijacking the political grassroots movements. The Job Guarantee serves as a door opener for the MMT salespeople. Wall Street’s ultimate goal, though, is deficit spending and the perpetual growth of public debt. #1, #2, #3, #4, #5

Poor Bernie Sanders, his supposedly left-wing economic platform has been written by Wall Street operatives.

You seem to have lost orientation: “Trump syndrome? The crazy seem to be going over the top everywhere, and the news is all gaslighting.”

No, not at all, it’s economics as usual. The whole UBI-JG discussion is pointless because economists in general and MMTers, in particular, lack the true Employment Theory since Keynes wrote the General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money.#1, #2

Keynes also messed up the Profit Theory.#3

So, neither MMT, nor Keynesianism, nor Walrasianism, nor Marxianism, nor Austrianism has any scientific merit.

This, though, does not matter much because in economics it is NOT the scientific truth-value that counts but the political use-value. To recall, economics started as Political Economy 200+ years ago and has been a cargo cult science since then.

Economists are not scientists who try to figure out how the monetary economy works, but agenda pushers. This is pretty obvious in the case of MMT and Stephanie Kelton. As Zach Carter plainly states: “After all, Wall Street took her under its wing before Democrats took her seriously.”

This is a good old tradition since Engels took Marx under his wing and Cowles took Koopmans, Arrow, Debreu, etc., under his wing, and it is kept alive by the Koch brothers, George Soros, and “an oddball clique of multimillionaire Wall Street traders” (Carter).

The stupid oligarchs spend their money more on porn stars; the smart oligarchs spend it more on economists. There is nothing to be confused about.

REPLY to Tom Hickey, Andrew Anderson, Matt Franko, Noah Way, Carlitos, Calgacus

There is political economics and theoretical economics. The main differences are: (i) The goal of political economics is to successfully push an agenda; the goal of theoretical economics is to successfully explain how the actual economy works. (ii) In political economics, anything goes; in theoretical economics, the scientific standards of material and formal consistency are observed.

Theoretical economics (= science) had been hijacked from the very beginning by political economists (= agenda pushers). Political economics has produced NOTHING of scientific value in the last 200+ years.

Political economics is easy to identify. It applies emotionally charged keywords like democracy, freedom, liberty, slavery, serfdom, poverty, exploitation, inequality, happiness, alienation, capitalism, socialism, Nazi, Commie, WeThePeople, etcetera.

Political economics, clearly, is NOT science. The Original Sin of economics is that science and politics have never been kept properly apart. As a result, economics stagnates for 200+ years at the proto-scientific level. And this means, in turn, that economic policy guidance NEVER had sound scientific foundations.

This holds for Walrasianism, Keynesianism, Marxianism, and Austrianism. This, of course, also holds for MMT. MMT is NOT a valid scientific theory. MMTers, like the rest of orthodox and heterodox economists, do not even understand what science is all about. #1 Worse, as the Huffington Post’s portrait of Stephanie Kelton clearly shows, MMT is a Wall-Street-sponsored agenda pushing for the one-percenters dressed up as progressive social policy.

“The basic idea is that the government can’t run out of money. It creates money just by spending.” (Stephanie Kelton) Because the macroeconomic Profit Law says Public Deficit = Private Profit, MMT’s social policy in effect co-creates the most unequal distribution of income and financial wealth in the history of mankind.

Since Adam Smith/Karl Marx, economics is a scientific fraud, and MMT is an integral part of it. #2 Let’s face it, bloggers like you keep economics ― intentionally or unintentionally does not matter ― firmly in the bottomless swamp of political economics. #3 With your senseless blather, you do not contribute to the solution of any economic problem. As useful political idiots, you ARE the problem. #4

#1 Both orthodox and heterodox economists are cargo cult scientists
#2 MMT is idiocy and fraud
#3 Yes, economics is a bogus science

This is the sectoral balances equation, Stephanie Kelton, Warren Mosler, and the rest of the MMT salespeople present on any occasion (X−M)+(G−T)+(I−S)=0.#1, #2

This equation is provably false because the balance of the business sector = profit is missing. It is lethal for the foundational macroeconomic equation not to contain the pivotal economic magnitude, profit.

This is the axiomatically correct balances equation (X−M)+(G−T)+(I−S)−(Q−Yd)=0. As you can easily see, it contains profit Q and distributed profit Yd.

Whoever does not understand the economic content of the two equations is out of economics.

To sum up the thread ‘Stephanie Kelton Has The Biggest Idea In Washington’:
  • Stephanie Kelton is an agenda pusher for the one-percenters.
  • MMT’s social policy proposals ― the Job Guarantee in particular ― are a political bluff package.
  • It is an unassailable scientific fact that Public Deficit = Private Profit.
As far as MMTers do not understand the Profit Law, they are stupid. As far as they understand it and nonetheless claim to promote the cause of the ninety-nine percenters, they are corrupt.

Whatever counts in Washington as “biggest idea” is with absolute certainty both stupid and corrupt.

You say: “The academe has a major defect in this discipline... the undergraduate degree program is not rigorous enough in applied mathematics and scientific methods .... this is not a 'hijacking!' you are drifting into conspiracy theory.”

I said: “Theoretical economics (= science) had been hijacked from the very beginning by political economists (= agenda pushers).”

This is a historical fact. #1, #2, #3, #4 The current curriculum is an entirely different matter. #5

MMT is agenda-pushing for the one-percenters. The T=Theory in MMT is a misnomer because it refers to science. Science, in turn, is defined by material and formal consistency. MMT’s sectoral balances equation, though, is inconsistent. So, MMT is storytelling cross-dressed as science. In other words, in the case of MMT, political economists (= agenda pushers) have hijacked theoretical economics (= science). #6

The task of theoretical economics is to figure out how the monetary economy works. MMTers have no idea how the price and profit mechanism works because they do not even know what profit is. #7

You say: “The MMT elites HATE the one-percenters...”

Hate/love are soap-opera criteria. They do NOT apply to science. The criteria that apply here are true/false, with truth defined as material and formal consistency.

So, it is a matter of indifference what the MMT elites hate.

The fact is that the sectoral balances equation MMT is built upon is provably false.#1 Because of this, the whole analytical superstructure = theory is false. This is quite compatible with the observation that some MMT propositions are correct or trivially true, just as some propositions in Greek mythology or Grimms' fairy tales are correct or trivially true. But the fact that Baker Street exists does not change the meta-fact that Sherlock Holmes is a NONENTITY.

MMT’s sectoral balances equation (X−M)+(G−T)+(I−S)=0 describes a zero-profit economy. Clearly, a zero-profit economy is a NONENTITY.

The MMT elites can tell exciting stories about who they hate or love. That is cheap sales talk. The economic fact of the matter is that according to the macroeconomic Profit Law, it holds that Public Deficit = Private Profit. Whether they are aware of it or not does not matter; MMTers de facto promote the cause of the one-percenters.#2

The MMT elites are either stupid or corrupt. In any case, they are NOT scientists.

The Kelton Fraud

Comment on Tom Hickey/Ben Judah on ‘The Right’s Straw Left’

Blog-Reference

Tom Hickey headlines: “The Right discovers it is up against MMT. Is Stephanie Kelton Superwoman?” This framing tells everyone that economics, too, has finally degenerated into a reality show. #1

To recall, economics claims since Adam Smith/Karl Marx to be a science. The criterion of science is true/false. So, the real question is NOT whether Stephanie Kelton is Superwoman but whether MMT, the economic approach she stands for, is true or false.

The short answer is: MMT is a scientific failure and a political fraud. Stephanie Kelton is just another clown in the political Circus Maximus.

In more detail #2, #3, #4, #5
  • MMT’s social policy proposals ― the Job Guarantee in particular ― are political door-openers and Friend-of-the-People signaling.
  • MMT policy guidance ultimately boils down to deficit-spending/money-creation.
  • It is a macroeconomic fact that Public Deficit = Private Profit, so MMT is money-making for the one-percenters.
  • MMT is stealth taxation for the ninety-nine percenters.
  • MMT is ALWAYS a bad deal for the ninety-nine-percenters.
  • The MMT policy of ever-increasing public debt amounts to the permanent self-financing of the Oligarchy.
If Stephanie Kelton, Professor at Stony Brook University, does not understand macroeconomics, she is an incompetent scientist; if she understands it, she is a political fraud. #6 In any case, she has to be expelled from the scientific community.

Stephanie Kelton and the self-destructive stupidity of the super-rich

Comment on Stephanie Kelton on ‘The Wealthy Are Victims of Their Own Propaganda ― To escape higher taxes, they must embrace deficits.’*

Blog-Reference and Blog-Reference

Stephanie Kelton is desperate:
  • For years now, MMTers propose deficit-spending/money-creation as the key policy instrument for the solution of any social/economic problem
  • Because of the macroeconomic Profit Law, it holds Public Deficit = Private Profit#1
  • Clearly, MMT policy is a permanent free lunch for the Oligarchy
  • The fabulous wealth of the Oligarchy is the mirror image of the fabulous public debt ($21.5 trillion).#2
  • Part of the free-lunch profit is invested in government bonds and generates ultra-safe interest income, which is taxed from WeThePeople, for an indefinite time
  • MMTers argue consistently against taxing the rich#3
  • MMTers deceive WeThePeople about the distributional effects of MMT policy#4
  • MMT academics corrupt science on a daily basis by violating well-defined standards.#5
No one has done more for the super-rich than MMTers. But then comes a super-rich imbecile and ruins everything: “To be blunt, the super-rich have become victims of their own successful marketing campaign. Conservative billionaires like Pete Peterson spent decades complaining about debt and deficits, putting enormous sums of money into a PR campaign to turn politicians and the public against deficit spending.”#6

What a big letdown for Stephanie Kelton who has worked so hard for the benefit of the Oligarchy.#7

Stephanie and Noah ― economics at the intellectual zero lower bound

Comment on Stephanie Kelton/Noah Smith on ‘Just When Should We Start Worrying About Deficits?’

Blog-Reference and Blog-Reference

This is the point at issue: “The Congressional Budget Office just said it expects the deficit to top $1 trillion in 2019, a record. Should we be worried?”

This is an open invitation for Stephanie Kelton to enthusiastically push the agenda of the oligarchy:#1

• “What I find interesting is … the fact that Republicans added roughly $2 trillion in stimulus at a time when nearly everyone said it shouldn’t be done, citing proximity to full employment. ‘You don’t do stimulus at full employment,’ was basically the argument. Well, here we are well into the experiment and ... what’s the problem? Inflation remains in check, unemployment has ticked down a bit further, small business confidence is at a 45-year high and growth has accelerated.”

• “And, as you note, they helped without raising inflation, which tells me they didn’t overstimulate, which further tells me there may be room to do even more. Tax Cuts 2.0, anyone?”

• “And so while critics use terms like, ‘blowing up the deficit’ or ‘drowning in red ink’ to describe what’s happening to the government’s finances, Republicans seem more interested in the fact that their deficits will improve the private sector’s finances, especially the biggest corporations and wealthiest people in America. In other words, the GOP seems to understand that the government’s red ink is our black ink!”

• “The most intuitive way to show this is through the sector financial balances. This becomes clear if you listen to Hatzius explain why he thinks sector-balance analysis can send a signal when the private sector’s financial positions are becoming overly fragile. And because it’s nothing more than accounting, it also tells us that the crowding-out story is 100 percent wrong — a government deficit raises private sector incomes; it doesn’t crowd out private finance.” #2

The economic blunder/fraud is in the reference to MMT’s sectoral balances equation and in the assertion “the government’s red ink is our black ink.” No, it is not OUR black ink but THEIRS = the oligarchy’s black ink. #3

Noah Smith does not spot the lethal fault in Stephanie Kelton’s argument and merely waves with the inflation red-herring: “It seems like you’re agreeing with me that accelerating inflation is a risk of deficits. The question is whether that would come slowly or quickly.”

What, then, is the lethal fault in Stephanie Kelton’s argument? Fact is:

• The MMT sectoral balances equation, i.e. (I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M)=0, is provably false.#4 MMT has no sound scientific foundations.

• Neither Stephanie nor Noah ever mentions the profit effect of deficit-spending/money-creation.#5

• From the axiomatically correct Profit Law Qm≡Yd+(I−Sm)+(G−T)+(X−M) follows Public Deficit = Private Profit. #6

• Therefore, MMT economic policy ultimately boils down to the permanent growth of public debt, which is nothing else than the permanent self-alimentation of the oligarchy.

MMT is failed/fake science #7, and the proponents of MMT in general and Stephanie Kelton, in particular, are stupid/corrupt agenda pushers.

REPLY to Ralph Musgrave on Sep 25

Noah Smith asked rhetorically ‘Just When Should We Start Worrying About Deficits?’

Stephanie Kelton answers with the MMT refrain Don’t worry, be happy. You parrot her with: “Personally, if my assets exactly equalled my debts, and I got a check from some sugar daddy, I would be LESS WORRIED (silly me) than prior to receiving the check.”

So, nothing to worry about except that what is unfolding in the grand political Circus Maximus is ― to use Stephanie Kelton’s words ― “one of the greatest cons ever perpetrated on the American people.”#1

The facts to worry about are:

• With their plea for deficit-spending/money-creation, Stephanie Kelton, her MMT colleagues, and the social media sales trolls push the agenda of Wall Street. #2

• MMTers claim to promote the cause of WeThePeople (care for jobs, health, education, social cohesion, public infrastructure, environment, etc.). These issues, though, are abused as talking points and door openers. MMTers call themselves Progressives, but de facto undermine the genuine social grassroots movements. #3, #4, #5

• In the Stephanie-Noah fake debate on Bloomberg, Stephanie Kelton does not talk any longer about her care for humanity but straightforwardly pushes for the next round of MMT deficit-spending/money-creation: “Tax Cuts 2.0, anyone?”

• Academic economics has entirely abandoned scientific standards and integrity. Not only have MMTers become full-time media clowns and useful political idiots. Academia, too, has become a failed institution.

• Economically, the point to worry about is that the US economy will die as soon as the growth of public and private debt slows down and eventually reverses. The axiomatically correct Profit Law says: increasing debt ⇒ macroeconomic profit up, decreasing debt ⇒ macroeconomic loss up. To this day, we have only experienced the first half of the debt story.

This pivotal MMT sectoral balances equation is false.

For the axiomatically correct equation, see National Accounting: scientific incompetence or political fraud? and Wikipedia and the promotion of economists’ idiotism and MMT and the magical profit disappearance and The Profit Theory is False Since Adam Smith.

This is the correct equation   (I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M)−(Qm−YD)=0, with Qm monetary profit and YD distributed profit.

Sectoral Balances: False = MMT, True = AXEC

There are four macroeconomic sectors (household sector, business sector, government sector, and the Rest of the world), but in the following charts, one sector is missing, more specifically, the balance of the business sector = profit is nowhere to be seen. Why are two or more sectors lumped together? This obscures the crucial fact that Public Deficit = Private Profit, given the balances of the household sector and the Rest of the world.

Exactly here, the rhetorical shell game starts because Domestic Private Balances is the household sector's and business sector's balances lumped together. Thus, profit becomes invisible.

The political fraud of MMT is in the false social solidarity of "We". Because Public Deficit = Private Profit "We" = ninety-nine percenters is actually "They" = one-percenters.

You say: “Does Kelton understand that Public Deficit = Private Profit? She said as much: “the government’s −$10 is always matched by +$10 in some other part of the economy.”

Kelton’s incompetence is in these four words “in some other part”. The macroeconomic Profit Law says unequivocally Public Deficit = Private Profit and NOT in “in some other part”. #1

Either Stephanie Kelton does not know the Profit Law, which is fundamental to ALL of economics, or she obscures it for some reason.

There is NO need to speculate about Stephanie Kelton’s ulterior motives. What has been proven is that MMT is materially and formally inconsistent, that is, scientifically worthless. #2 Therefore, ALL economic policy proposals of MMTers, including Stephanie Kelton, have NO sound scientific foundations.

Contrary to the social appearance, MMT is de facto agenda-pushing for the one-percenters. MMTers, including Stephanie Kelton, are either stupid or corrupt or both. #3

“THEIR” red ink is not “OUR” black ink but “THEIR” profit
because
Public Deficit (red ink) = Private Profit (black ink),
if the other sectors are taken out of the picture for the moment.

Note that "private entities net flow of savings" is composed of the household sector's saving and the business sector's profit. The balance of the household sector is called saving. The balance of the business sector is called profit. Both cannot be lumped together to private entities' savings. This is the Humpty Dumpty Fallacy.

There is NO “private sector”, only the business sector (balance profit/loss) and the household sector (balance saving/dissaving). The 4-sector #ProfitLaw reads Q≡Yd+(I−S)+(G−T)+(X−M).
